Disney's Darkwing Duck #3

In the 90s, even breakfast was extreme.

Disney’s Darkwing Duck #3

Disney Comics (January, 1992)

“Brawl In The Family” part 3: “Fowl Play”
WRITERS: Tad Stones, Jymm Magon, & Jan Strnad
ADAPTATION/PENCILER: John Blair Moore
COVER INKER: Rick Hoover
COLOR COLORIST: Gail Bailey
INKER: George Wildman
COLORIST: Gaff
LETTERER: Gaspar Salandino

Darkwing and Gosalyn begin to bond, and the girl even survives Darkwing’s breakfast training course. (See cover.) However, Bulba plays on Darkwing’s ego and lures the superhero into a trap where he’s captured by the police and the bad guys know right where to find Gosalyn.

What they got right: I like seeing Darwking and Gosalyn having fun together. It’s a good moment. Not much else happens this issue but that was worth it.

What they got wrong: The fourth wall breaking is not something the show, and definitely not the episode, did so it feels out of place when they bring up the fact that the “grape jelly stain on the photograph” gag from last issue was already overdone…plus it was forced to keep the gag running after the show ended it, if memory serves. Speaking of the photograph, I don’t know what was in the draft Moore was given but in the show it was in color and seeing it after hearing the lullaby Gosalyn’s grandfather used to sing her is how Darkwing learns the code to the Ramrod. (Spoiler: it’s part of the song.) Instead, he won’t figure it out until next issue and it works better in the show.

Recommendation: It’s always interesting to see how a story changes between formats, and it’s still a good issue, but admittedly one where not a lot happens. It worked better in the show, but I still recommend the complete miniseries.
