In case you’ve forgotten, Hero Zero is Dark Horse’s answer to Ultraman, only the human host is a 14-year-old boy from Nevada. So when he joins his father and friend Billy to the San Diego Comic-Con he’s super-excited. Enough so that he goes for a run as Hero Zero, and ends up buzzing what he thinks is a coral reef, but is actually Godzilla. Not happy about being buzzed, he goes on a rampage in San Diego, and even the size changing monster-fighter is no match for the monster. The only way to stop him is to supercharge his powers so he can carry Godzilla far away from California. But the battle isn’t without cost. David’s father learns his son is Hero Zero and begs him not to do so again. David is willing to follow his father’s wishes since Billy was killed during the battle with Godzilla.
What they got right: Of course Dark Horse is going to have their giant monster-fighter go up against Godzilla. And the fight is epic. David and Hero Zero are literally pushed to their limits but still manage to get a good shot in now and then so it’s not a slaughter.
What they got wrong: Except for Billy, of course. Was Dark Horse trying to end the Hero Zero series even though he hadn’t been in a comic in quite a while? (Not since “Comics Greatest World” as far as I know.) Not having read most of the Hero Zero comics I don’t know if Billy was a regular character or not but either way the death seemed pointless except to end the Hero Zero stories.
Recommendation: This was a crossover Dark Horse had to do and the right team was on it. Whether you know Hero Zero or not it’s worth picking up.
As so this is the last of the Godzilla comics I own. I would like to catch up with IDW’s Godzilla if I have income again, but until that time all Godzilla comics in my collection are reviewed and noted. But we aren’t done with kaiju just yet. Check Sunday night’s comic post to see what we’ll be doing next week.
