Macross II The Micron Conspiracy #2

Second cover and I’m stuck for a (bad) joke.

When Silvie calls for backup the UNR mecha that had her and Hibiki trapped fly off. There is no evidence they were there but the police still act like they were. Silvie is concerned that there are UNR sympathizers within the U.N. Spacy government, and she tells Hibiki about missing Micron (micronized/human-sized Zentraedi) mecha designers, as well as thefts from the old Macross space fortress. Hibiki talks to their boss, but isn’t sure he isn’t hiding something. He escapes a kidnapping attempt but some woman is watching him. Things aren’t so good for Silvie, either, when she’s framed as an UNR sympathizer!

What they got right: The mystery is getting interesting. While the mecha are taking a backseat to this story I’m invested enough in the mystery to accept it (even if Robotech/Macross mecha are what I probably bought this comic for when it hit the shelves).

What they got wrong: They keep bringing up Ishtar, but they don’t explain what the incident was. I know it doesn’t matter to this mystery but when you keep bringing it up a quick one-panel or backpage mention would be nice. I hadn’t seen Macross II at the time so I didn’t know she was a girl at the heart of the Marduk invasion…or who the Marduk were.

Recommendation: I stand by the fact that you don’t need to know who Ishtar and the Marduk are (although if you’re going to keep mentioning them it would be nice to know) to enjoy the story. It’s still worth getting so far, but there are three issues left to go.
