There was a time when practical effects (pyrotechnics, animatronics, puppets, gimmicked objects, prosthetics, the list goes on) were the only way to go. When computer generated imagery came along, that all went out the window because CG was cheaper. And didn’t always look as good. Now there are directors and special effects teams that are realizing that some effects need to be done the old-fashioned way but modern technology can still make them amazing.
