Gamera #3
Dark Horse (October, 1996)
“Up From The Deep!” WRITER: Dave Chipps PENCILER: Mozart Couto INKER: Mike Sellers COLORIST: Art Knight COVER ART: Yuji Kaida LETTERER: Clem Robins DESIGNER: Mark Cox ASSISTANT EDITOR: Ian Stude EDITOR: Randy Stradley
Mayumi looks up Lutz in prison, and he tells her how Gamera destroyed, Zigra. He tries to use the amulet to barter for his freedom but Gustavo is there to steal it under Karbone’s orders. Before they can reclaim the amulet, Mayumi and Lutz are teleported to the alien’s ship. Her name is Freena, and Zigra was a bioweapon she was transporting. She’s hoping Mayumi can point her to one of Earth’s kaiju but before she gets the chance Viras appears in Paris, and thanks to the amulet he isn’t just controlling Karbone but now Gamera as well!
What they got right: The action was good and the art is good. To be honest I’m neutral about the whole alien bioweapon thing but Freena seems like a fun character.
What they got wrong: If you didn’t get the previous issue you won’t be able to translate Freena’s hip space lingo, and I hope you can put up with the way she talks when she speaks English.
Recommendation: The finale is next week but so far this story is holding up and worth getting for kaiju fans.
