Iron Man #259
Marvel (August, 1990)
“Like All Secrets, Easily Revealed” WRITER: John Byrne PENCILER: John Romita, Jr. INKER: BobWiacek COLORIST: Faul Becton LETTERER: Michael Heisler EDITOR: Howard Mackie
Iron Man barely manages to get past Titanium Man’s ghost to stop the reactor from melting down in a bad spot, flying it out to the ocean. Then Tony disappears for three days and wakes up in San Francisco, possibly the machinations of a new business rival, Mr. DeWitt. Back home, with Stark Enterprises in turmoil and workers striking, Iron Man returns to the reactor and deals with Titanium Man again, but a slip has Tony revealing he’s still the original Iron Man, the one who fought Titanium Man, which is all the Living Laser wanted to hear…because nobody should kill the original Iron Man but him!
What they got right: It’s kind of clever on the Living Laser’s part to get Iron Man to admit he’s the right one. The mystery with DeWitt could be interesting.
What they got wrong: But it’s a distraction to the main story. And that’s still not as bad as having a second subplot involving the Mandarin torturing one of his subordinates who gave Mandy a copy of one of his rings, which doesn’t even affect the current story. I have when there are too many subplots.
Recommendation: This is interesting enough to recommend a look but until I know how this particular adventure ends and if I should care about DeWitt (I don’t care about Mandarin’s subplot, not from this issue alone) it’s a mild recommendation at best.
