Darkhawk #2

Marvel (April, 1991)

“Goblin’s Prey!”
WRITER: Danny Fingeroth
ARTIST: Mike Manley
COLORIST: Joe Rosas
LETTERER: Joe Rosen
EDITOR: Howard Mackie

Chris, as Darkhawk, pays a visit to Basin to put a scare into him, but Hobgoblin, still seeking the power of the amulet, attacks him. Darkhawk is injured but changing back into Chris allows him to escape Hobgoblin. Thinking his superhero career is cut short, he sees Hobgoblin heading for the amusement park, and Spider-Man right on his heels. Chris goes to save two homeless men buried during the fight and sees Spider-Man getting taken out, so he risks turning into Darkhawk once more. However, his armored body is now healed and together the two heroes chase the villain away. Then Spider-Man warns him about the whole power and responsibility thing, which Chris ponders.

What they got right: I like that Chris is a novice hero, and thus isn’t perfect. He needs Spider-Man’s help in fighting Hobgoblin, but Darkhawk isn’t a complete loser in the fight and Spidey needs his help, too.

What they got wrong: I forget, is it ever explained how Hobgoblin learns about the amulet when only one homeless guy seems to have any knowledge about it and he’s drunk off of his backside and not willing to tell Hobgoblin or Basin where to find it?

Recommendation: Something good actually did come out of the 90s and his name is Darkhawk. Check this series out.
