“Yesterday’s” Comic> Darkhawk #3

Chris uses a cheap car to test his Darkhawk power with and nearly gets in trouble with the cops, who take pity on him since rumor is spreading that his dad was a dirty cop. Chris’ home life is still in turmoil and he snaps at his friends and girlfriend at school as the pressure is getting to him. When he overhears a kid talking about another Bazin operation his brother is a part of (the kid, not Chris), Darkhawk drops in to stop it, but Hobgoblin attacks him, and then Spider-Man (who left a tracking device on Darkhawk that disappears when Chris changes) attacks Hobgoblin. Having had enough, Darkhawk tries to kill Hobgoblin, but the villain uses a hostage so he can escape. Spider-Man chews Darkhawk out for going into Punisher mode, and with the tracker destroyed Spidey has no way to keep tabs on him. Meanwhile, Bazin convinces Hobgoblin the Darkhawk amulet isn’t the power source he’s searching for so Bazin can get it for himself and Chris gets a call warning him to get rid of the amulet to avoid its curse.

What they got right: As much as the 90s annoys me for having angry superheroes, it makes sense in Chris’ life. There’s also a concern about whether or not Bazin has other cops on the payroll which explains why Darkhawk won’t be working with them. We also get to meet Chris’s friends and his girlfriend, Cheryl, which fills out his life and gives him people to play off of.

What they got wrong: Or as I know will happen as the series goes on, people to distance himself from. It would be better off if he didn’t have a supporting cast considering they’re about to be tossed aside in time, even Cheryl. Also, how did Chris get a running car for $75 to crash into himself, even at 1991 prices?

Recommendation: It’s continuing at a fair pace and I’m still enjoying it, 90s nonsense aside. Worth checking out.
