Star Wars 3D #1

Wow, Star Wars has been out for 10 years!

Star Wars #1

Blackthorne Publishing (December, 1987)

WRITER: Len Wein
ARTIST: Glen Johnson & Jim Nelson
LETTERER: Jim Nelson

Han brings Luke back to Tatooine along with Chewbacca and C-3PO so the young Jedi-in-training can settle affairs concerning the farm. After visiting his former home, Luke decides to use the Force to find a proper owner, bringing them to Mos Eisley and a feared spice smuggler whose farm was taken by the Empire, leading him to his criminal life. Luke tries to convince him to take the moisture farm, but he’s convinced that it’s too late for him. Then a bar fight happens and Luke leaves him the deed, saying he can do what he wants with it. He decides to return to the life of a farmer.

What they got right: Using the Rebels moving from Yavin and other cues places the story just after the events of the original movie despite the third one being long past. The story was good and the art (when you can see it–more on that shortly) depicted the characters well.

What they got wrong: While my Blackthorne 3D comics seems to hold together better than most of the other ones I have, including later comics that I can’t even review because I can’t see anything, you still need a very strong light to read the darn thing. I needed a flashlight to read the text, although the art held up well and with enough light the 3D still works, even if it looks like they’re all standees rather than truly three-dimensional characters.

Recommendation: If someone ever finds the original artwork and releases this in 2D I’d say give it a look. Under the circumstance only do so if you have a very bright light to read with.

I remember the popularity of 3-D comic books in the 1980s. But those 3-D glasses fade out over time, that’s the only problem! I had some 3-D comic book but I can’t remember what it was! Battletech maybe? I think it was some comic book with robots in it.
