The Batman Adventures #22
DC Comics (July, 1994)
“Good Face Bad Face” WRITER: Kelley Puckett PENCILER: Mike Parobeck INKER: Rick Burchett COLORIST: Rick Taylor LETTERER: Richard Starkings ASSISTANT EDITOR: Darren Vincenzo EDITOR: Scott Peterson
Two-Face escapes from Arkham. (I think the only ones surprised at this are the people who work there and the judges that keep sending them back.) Batman still thinks “Harvey” is in there due to his need of the coin and goes after him to find out for sure. Two-Face breaks out crooks Harvey Dent once put away to form his new gang, but Batman catches on to his pattern and Gotham PD catches them at the second prison he goes after. Two-Face is taken away, but Batman notices his stride is wrong and that it’s a guy in a mask. He confronts the real villain and gets his answer. Batman keep’s Two-Face’s coin to remember Harvey by, knowing Arkham will give him another as part of his therapy.
What they got right: There’s more character exploration in this one as Batman tries to figure out if “Harvey” and “Big Bad Harv” are still fighting each other within Two-Face. I also like the moments with Gordon and Batman when the former tries to convince the latter not to do something stupid…and then Batman of all people does something stupid.
What they got wrong: Why is this comic (or any of them but I have no other complaints with the issue–except the usual “how does Batman stick his cowl inside those masks”?) split up into multiple chapters? To emulate the show’s commercial breaks? Then why give each chapter its own name?
Recommendation: This was a pretty good comic. It’s not a must-own since it doesn’t tell us anything the show didn’t, but it may be worth a look at the very least.
