Have you ignored Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo because it’s gone on so long? Or because it uses cartoony animals? Maybe you need to give the wandering samurai in feudal Japan another look. I preferred the Lone Wolf and Cub samurai era manga from Japan….translated into English…was it Epic Comics? Very good comic series in the late 80s/early 90s. The Bushido role playing game was also a good way to experience life in feudal Japan without getting into a time machine!

A bit darker for my taste, at least in visual style. As Sims mentioned, this comic gets dark at times, too.
