Transformers: The War Within Preview
Dreamwave (August, 2002)
If you’re wondering why I’m reviewing the preview AFTER the first issue, it’s because the continuity works better here.
WRITER: Simon Furman ARTIST: Don Figueroa COLORS: Dreamwave GRAPHIC DESIGN: Paul Villafuerte & Kevin Lee
Only half of the comic is the story, with the other half being production art of the characters, so this is going to be a short review. Believing Grimlock is more Decepticon than Autobot (and I kind of agree with him), Starscream tries to make him remember the “good old days” in the gladiatorial arena where Megatron chose his future Decepticons and telling him about an attack Megatron put him, Thundercracker, and Skywarp, on to attack an Autobot command post. But instead of joining him he springs a trap for the trio, which they escape thanks to Skywarp’s teleportation powers. It’s a decent short story but maybe with more time devoted to what Megatron was doing with the arena might have set up the story better. While it does get mentioned in the next issue I’ll be reviewing (unless I messed up) it’s not a must-have issue today. Maybe if you find a trade collection or something it’s worth reading, but not worth tracking down unless you want the complete run.
