A quiet Gotham City night. A couple and the boy come out of a movie when they’re robbed at gunpoint. This time they survived, but the last time Bruce Wayne saw this happen HE was the boy. While it will cost him a growing relationship with the boy’s mother, this was the situation that created Batman, and Batman isn’t going to let the crook get away with it!
What they got right: The Batman of the Animated Series isn’t the Batman of the comics. The show wasn’t afraid of his human side. So a story in which Bruce confronts a situation similar to the one that killed his parents and led to the Batman’s creation works better here. He could save his parents or find their killer but this guy is still the main target. It’s too bad he couldn’t make up a good story, or admit part of it (the deja vu part) to keep his girlfriend but that’s the life of Batman!
What they got wrong: Had this been a regular Batman story instead of the show tie-in, it would have gone on and on about Bruce’s parents and how he couldn’t save them and all of that other 90s angst and brooding Batman was filled with. While I don’t miss that I wish we could have had space for a further examination as he tries to hunt the guy down.
Recommendation: This would have made a good episode and it’s too bad it’s not among the few adapted to such. Give this one a read.
