Dodekain #4
Antarctic Press (February, 1995)
While no credits are given (except for the writer/artist on the cover) I’m just going to assume it’s the same people again.
WRITER/ARTIST: Masayuki Fujihara TRANSLATION: Kuni Kimura COPY EDITOR: Elin Winkler COVER COLORIST: ARNie TOUCH-UP ART: Pat Kelley LETTERER: Shon Howell
The Zogelian mothership heads to Japan to use Koyori to force Takuma to surrender Dodekain. Instead he thinks of the Earth as Koyori and, remembering trying to put out the embers on her back in the first issue, tries to take out the Zogelians that way. While he still overdoes it a bit he is still able to save the Earth…more or less.
What they got right: Everything I’ve said before continues here. I like the art, I like the characters, I like the concept. Nothing new to add.
What they got wrong: However, it’s still too short, and I can’t feel sorry for Dr. G since he’s willing to let one innocent planet die to avenge his. Also, for some reason the story ends with Dodekain flashing a giant hologram of Takuma, and I have two problems with that. One, he is supposed to be 12 years old but since his clothes were burned off by the teleportation beam he flashes the entire planet. Two, why would Doctor G add such a thing? So he could brag when it was over? To whom? Had he followed the original plan he would have blown up the Earth and the aliens. Who would be left?
Recommendation: This first story arc was fun to read and it’s worth picking up. As for the second and final arc…I don’t remember enjoying it as much so we’ll see in the next couple of weeks if it holds up.
