Darkhawk #11
Marvel (January, 1992)
“Heart Of The Hawk” part 2: “Heart Of Stone” WRITER: Danny Fingeroth PENCILER: Mike Manley INKER: Ricardo Villagran COLORIST: Joe Rosas LETTERER: Bill Oakley EDITOR: Nel Yomtov
At the trial Grace tries to hold it together, even with Johnathan in the hospital and Chris’s girlfriend arguing with Bazin’s daughter. Bazin even threatens Allegra (not with death but with being shut out if he goes to jail, although he does grab her arm, hurting and scaring her), then sends an assassin to finish John off, but Mike intervenes. While all this is going on, Darkhawk is fighting with Tombstone. St. Johnny is still alive but there’s another party, the previous owner of the amulet, who rescues Chris at one point and tries to warn him away from the amulet before running off. It’s all for naught, however, as Tombstone succeeds in ripping the amulet from Darkhawk’s body and is prepared to finish the hero off.
What they got right: The fight between Darkhawk and Tombstone is well done, and the mystery of Mike and what he’s doing is interesting. The trial is also well done for a trial in a superhero comic.
What they got wrong: There’s too many storylines at one time, though. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, when you have as many storylines going as in your average soap opera you need to trim down. All three (four if you count more on Darkhawk’s history), while at least connecting better than some other attempts, would be more interesting on their own rather than all trying to take center stage at the same time.
Recommendation: That said, I’m still enjoying this story arc. I still encourage you to pick this series up.
