Moon Freight 3 V2

Leave it to Katie to be happy during a picket march.

Moon Freight 3 Volume 2: Sisters And Union Brothers

WRITER/ARTIST/PUBLISHER: Luke Foster

This volume collects the strips from August 17, 2009August 16,2010

Changes were in store for the comic during this period. While Foster’s art style still wasn’t where it was near the end it was edging closer. This book has images showing how he drew the characters in the later years of the strip. I’ll get to the rest later. The biggest change was the addition of color. Originally intended to be used for just one week to celebrate the strip’s one year anniversary, fan response prompted him to keep using color for the rest of the series and it does help.

There were three new characters added to the cast as well. We’re introduced to Larry’s sister, Katie, who had been mentioned before. The best way to describe her is “imagine if Pinkie Pie from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic was a supergenius trying to break the secret of faster-than-light travel while still in college. Another sentient rat, May, is her partner on the project. She’s just as smart with a bit more snark. The final addition is X. Originally created as a janitor robot, Eleanor uses the rules to take him from the station to be her personal slave. X, having no personality due to not finding the right one, becomes a revolutionary, who now is serving his sentence on Moon Freight 3 for holding Eleanor hostage because she pushed him over the edge. X changes his color from what you see on the cover and spends time within the walls of the station plotting his escape if “the man” comes after him. That tells you what a horrible human being rat she is.

Change was in store for Larry as well. When his long-distance girlfriend breaks up with him, Larry goes into a funk for a while before deciding she wasn’t mean about it and she had a point that Larry had no focus. So he started trying to remake himself. Long story short he reluctantly ends up the new union liaison with the Moon Freight company. He takes the new responsibility surprisingly well considering how we first met him. Good for you, Larry. And Bolts becomes a ladies man and I don’t want to dwell on why.

Bonus features for this collection includes some early pages from a potential novel when he thought the comic wouldn’t get made as well as how he draws Larry, Bolts, and Katie. These are some good additions as I like a bit of behind-the-scenes as I work on my own art. (Plus the way he draws the eyes was one of the influences for the “Jake & Leon” style as well as The Simpsons and another sci-fi comic I can’t remember the name of.)

Just like the previous volume, this collection is available through IndyPlanet but as of this writing the sale should still be on if you contact him through Twitter or Tumblr as well as reading the links above to see it online. It’s a good comic that you should check out. Next week is the last volume I’ve been able to pick up and we’ll conclude our look there.
