I like Independence Day. The characters may be weak and there are some odd plot moments but I still find myself rooting for them and the effects are pretty good for the time and budget. I do not “turn my brain off” for it. I simply accept it’s an alternate universe similar to our own but with some minor differences. It stays consistent to its world (if not always ours) and while I can still see things wrong I accept the movie as a whole.

I bring this up because Matt Singer of Screen Crush is tired of being told to turn his brain off when it comes to mindless “popcorn movies” when it does so many things wrong. As an example he uses his review of Jurassic World and the complaints of the movie’s defenders, versus the original Jurassic Park.
