Darkhawk #12

Marvel (February, 1992)

“Heart Of The Hawk” part 3: “Masks”
WRITER: Danny Fingeroth
PENCILER: Mike Manley
INKER: Ricardo Villagran
COLORIST: Joe Rosas
LETTERER: Bill Oakley
EDITOR: Nel Yomtov

Tombstone removed Darkhawk’s amulet last issue and this issue he’s about to kill him, until St. Johnny turns his arm into a gun (which he later denies) and blasts the villain, who escapes with the amulet. St. Johnny patches the wound where the amulet was and Darkhawk/Chris takes off to find a disguise at home and check in on his brothers. Both times he passes out, scaring Grace the first time and barely getting caught the second. At the trial Allegra forces Broderick (Bazin’s son) to admit to his father’s crimes. He’s convicted of murder but as his attorney is trying to get a mistrial called by the judge Savage Steel breaks in to kill Bazin. Darkhawk is forced to intervene but Bazin has an extradition team ready to rescue him. Mike Powell shows up trying to nab Bazin but end up being taken with him as Darkhawk learns that the PI Grace hired is actually Savage Steel. Now the dying Darkhawk has two choices…save his father or track down Tombstone and get his amulet back before he dies!

What they got right: We get to see how close Chris actually is to his family, even if his Darkhawk activities are starting to put a wedge between them. We also see Allegra’s motivations for turning against her father, and deciding that her testimony (based on her history of getting kicked out of school after school) wouldn’t work as well as her brother’s (who has a secret she used against him). Plus the Darkhawk mystery, and St. Johnny’s connection to it, continues.

What they got wrong: Shouldn’t Savage Steel have waited until to see what the judge would do first? Or wait to see if Bazin tried to escape? And would he really be so powerful that the warden is serving him cake in his office?

Recommendation: The storyline continues to get interesting. I still say get this series.
