Darkhawk #17
Marvel (July, 1992)
“Hostages” WRITER: Danny Fingeroth ARTIST: Mike Manley COLORIST; Kevin Tinsley LETTERER: Bill Oakley EDITOR: Nel Yomtov
Chris manages to get past the terrorist that caught him and become Darkhawk. He challenges the Peristrike Force, while Cheryl also risks her life standing up to the psychos. With some assistance from Dr. Vonda, Darkhawk is eventually able to beat the Peristrike Force…except for one more. His name is Psi-Wolf and his psionic power is great enough to make Darkhawk commit suicide!
What they got right: Silly as the name may be now, the Peristrike Force at least offer Darkhawk a good challenge without tapping into Spidey’s villain pool.
What they got wrong: Cheryl just seems to be here to be a target. So far she doesn’t really feel like part of the series despite being Chris’s girlfriend. And on the cover there is Volga Belle, one of the Peristrike Force. So you have some idea how bad the character designs are. Siberion has a mask that is supposed to be scary but isn’t. Scattershot and Psi-Wolf are also rather lame but at least they look human.
Recommendation: I’m still into this story, if only so Darkhawk can start building his own rogues gallery. Give it a look, but prepare yourself for lame villain costumes.
