Marvel Action Hour: Iron Man #8
FINAL ISSUE
Marvel (June, 1995)
“Mutiny Of The Miners” WRITER: Dean Davis PENCILER: Anthony Williams INKER: John Nyberg COLORIST: Sam Parsons LETTERER: Dave Sharpe EDITOR: Tom Daning
Tony and Rhodey test out new robot asteroid miners on national TV, but Mandarin tries to take advantage of that. MODOK takes control of the broadcasting satellite and uses it to take control of the robots. When Iron Man figures this out he uses the space station to bounce a technobabble beam to disrupt the satellite and uses the space station to temporarily broadcast for the TV network. And since they leased the satellite from Hammer, he’s responsible for the damages.
I wanted to praise this issue for not even trying to pretend it’s adapting an episode and tell an original story for a change. However, Davis decided to keep the spirit of the show in place, which is the big problem. There’s some banter between Tony and Rhodes, the comic even under Fein seemed to only be interested in Mandarin, MODOK, and Justin Hammer, and the solution is ridiculous technobabble that seems to have taken extra work. The art is the usual 90s bad artwork on top of it.
In other words this issue, which ends the tie-in comic, is to be as avoided as the show. It’s only staying in my collection for completeness even though I’m missing a few issues. It reminds me of what I don’t like about the show. I still say stick with season 2 of the cartoon and avoid the rest of it.
