Darkhawk #21

Marvel (November, 1992)

“Return To Forever” part 1 “Buried Vengeance”
WRITER: Danny Fingeroth
ARTIST: Mike Manley
COLORIST: Joe Rosas
LETTERER: Bill Oakley
EDITOR: Nel Yomtov

Darkhawk is starting to experience headaches, making Chris question using the power again. While visiting his dad’s grave marker, Chris ends up saving Allegra from a sniper at HER father’s grave marker. This puts the girl on his mind and gets him in trouble with Cheryl because of it. Later that night, Chris sees someone digging up Bazin’s tomb. They actually have a casket, filled with some of the strange occultic trinkets Bazin collected, and one of them has actual power. Now Darkhawk must deal with headaches AND the monster on the cover.

What they got right: “Return To Forever” claims to be leading to the big mystery of Darkhawk’s origin, which for the upcoming 25th issue makes a good place to do it. Bazin’s legacy continues to be a thorn in Darkhawk’s side. We also may be getting some more info on whatever it was Allegra used to blackmail her brother into testifying against their father.

What they got wrong: Is Cheryl only here as a barrier to Allegra or to give Chris someone else to estrange thanks to Darkhawk? I keep forgetting she’s a character in this comic. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to see Chris and Allegra become an item; there is way too much baggage between their families. I’m just saying that Cheryl is rather meaningless in this series. We’re also getting another named story arc rather soon after the last one.

Recommendation: We’re finally getting the answers to the origin of Darkhawk that Marvel will later ignore for War Of The Kings. Otherwise it’s not a major issue itself.
