Transformers Armada #17

Transformers Armada #17

Dreamwave (November, 2003)

“Worlds Collide” finale
WRITER: Simon Furman
PENCILER: Don Figueroa
INKERS: Elaine To & Rob Armstrong
COLORISTS: David Cheung, Eric Burns, & Rob Ruffolo
LETTERER: Ben Lee

The Land Military Team manages to get the Star Saber out of Megatron’s hands, after he defeats Galvatron. Unicron’s other acolytes head to Cybertron, where Jetfire’s team is trying to shut down the multiple space bridges. Optimus is contacted by Unicron through the “ghost” of the Transformer Optimus was talking to, and told that his reality was coming up, and that the dead Optimus was his calling card to the next reality. As Jetfire plans to sacrifice himself to blow up the space bridge system he sees the reality where Optimus is and jumps in just as the probe finally finds them. The acolytes are destroyed and Optimus and Jetfire return to Cybertron with the power to combine and the warning of Unicron’s coming.

What they got right: I would complain that the “over…finished” line snuck into this comic but considering the restraint he’s shown through most of his Dreamwave run in avoiding his “Furmanisms”, this comes off more as a cute inside gag. The ending was satisfying and sets up the coming Unicron as well as the coming change to Transformers Energon.

What they got wrong: It’s a Furman story and only one complaint was something that was Hasbro’s doing. When Optimus and Jetfire get (I’m just going to use the Energon term) the spark of combination they change colors and not much else. That’s pretty much what Hasbro did to a number of the figures on both sides, repaints for the “Unicron Battles” subline within Armada. It’s still lame. As for Furman, when did Optimus find out Over-Run’s name? He never met him.

Recommendation: A good end to the storyline and setup to the final battle with Unicron in this reality. I would recommend the miniseries.

And if that isn’t enough Armada for you, Free Comic Inside tonight is going back to the mini-comics from that toyline.
