Darkhawk #28
Marvel (June, 1993)
“Shattered Fates” part 3: “Time To Kill” WRITER: Danny Fingeroth PENCILER: Tod Smith INKER: Ian Akin COLORIST: Troy Sayers LETTERER: Bill Oakley EDITOR: Nel Yomtov
Zarrko sends Darkhawk and the New Warriors scattered around Chronopolis, each grouping ending up in a different time period. Their supposed mission is to track down the body of Kang The Conquerer, which Zarrko claims will demoralise Ravonna, Kang’s lover/enemy, and stop her from conquering all time so Zarrko can do so. However, his real plan is to use the energy created by the superhumans out of time, collect it with his “Radical Time Stabilizer” (he seriously called it that…in the 90s) to charge up his “time bomb” (probably a pun) to destroy Ravonna. He also plans to double-cross our heroes (no surprise). Firestar and Night Thrasher end up in an area akin to ancient Greece, Speedball and Silhouette end up in a dinosaur time period, Nova and Namorita show up in Japan before the bomb dr0ps in World War II, and Darkhawk ends up in a future (possibly 2099) where people think he’s a future savior called “The Powell”.
What they got right: As one mystery ends for Darkhawk, a new one begins. This keeps the series fresh while still keeping the “Mysterious” in the description. Namorita was right to keep Nova from stopping the bomb drop if for no other reason than messing with time is a no-no.
What they got wrong: Which brings up a question as to how Chronopolis works. They’re all headed to the same tower. Is this place some portal into time, or some replica of time…how DOES Chronopolis work anyway? It’s not really explained here. They do, however, have the usual exposition of how their powers work and only Firestar’s feels like normal conversation.
Recommendation: I’m still very much enjoying this storyline, which concludes next issue. I still say pick this series up.
