Darkhawk #29
Marvel (July, 1993)
“Shattered Fates” finale: “Past Shock” WRITER: Danny Fingeroth PENCILER: Tod Smith INKER: Ian Akin COLORIST: Troy Sayers LETTERER: Bill Oakley EDITOR: Nel Yomtov
As our heroes find that they can’t get closer to tower Darkhawk suspects something’s up and bluffs his way back to Zarrko’s ship. After taking down Servitor, he forces Zarrko to bring the New Warriors back. Zarrko agrees to send them to the points in time they wanted to change but Zarrko reveals that will power the time bomb just as well. Darkhawk fights with Zarrko and finds himself back in the past, in time to see someone take away his dad and Bazin, both still barely alive, for an unnamed boss before the New Warriors force Zarrko to bring him back. Darkhawk destroys the time bomb and Zarrko sends everyone back to present day.
What they got right: The New Warriors are where they want to be but some are having second thoughts, wondering what the right decision is, while others know what they want to do. It’s interesting to see each hero respond in their own way, yet none of them are able to change their pasts. Also Darkhawk learns he can fly, not just glide, which is cool.
What they got wrong: I don’t like seeing Jason slowly go insane. It’s just doesn’t feel right to me. I also was satisfied with the ending for Mike and Bazin but you could kind of tell Fingeroth had more plans for them when their bodies vanished. Personal preferences.
Recommendation: A good end to the story arc, but I hope we’re done with these mini-events for a while and just have a regular comic adventure. This is reminding me too much of modern comics.
