The first story is the length of the usual back-up story, so I wonder if they mixed up the order? It is the more “Street Fightery” of the pair, at least what I usually see from Udon Studios. Our two ladies have a misunderstanding, at least in their first fight, as Juri thinks Kimberly is doing pro-Shadowloo graffiti but she’s actually advertising a new club that Kimberly likes and Juri hates, leading to round two. We don’t see what happens and the comic really doesn’t tell you who is who. I had to look it up. Otherwise a fun little story, but it still feels like a back-up feature.

What I assume is the main story takes us from Metro City, where the first story takes place, to Naishall, a small Asian country where the military is aided by private security companies. One of those hired military men, Luke, is assigned to aid detective Sartori in tracking down thieves of local artifacts, selling them to fund their cause against the government. They’re kind of the bad guys and Sartori agrees with their stated goals but not their actual actions, plus he’s a cop and their thieves. Luke and Sartori track the group down and have to fight for their lives in a flooding chamber that used to be an aqueduct. The villains get away but not with the relief in the aqueduct.

What they got right: Luke and Sartori are a good team-up. They have similar experiences in their backstory which they bond over, and I think they become friends by the end. What little action we get is done well, and of course the art is good…it’s Udon Studios!

What they got wrong: It doesn’t really feel like a Street Fighter story to me. Granted, this is personal perspective, but nothing related to street fighting is involved in the story, nor is there much fighting at all. We don’t even get a cool chi power move or anything. The story comes from Capcom so I assume it factors in to whichever character is in Street Fighter 6 if not both of them.

What I think overall: I very much enjoyed this comic, which is not surprising from this group.

Thus ends my deeper dives into the 2023 Free Comic Book Day offerings. Don’t worry, there are still plans for Monday.
