Scott Pilgrim Free Comic Book Day Story (Scott Pilgrim (color))
Okay, the story originally appeared in Free Scott Pilgrim Free Comic Book Day (May, 2006), the cover is from Full Color Odds & Ends (2008), which reprinted the story, but in both cases there was more in the comic than this one untitled story. not sure what they were doing at comiXology back in the day. The above title is how it’s listed in the Amazon store.
WRITER/ARTIST: Scott O’Malley
Wallace and even Ramona are getting annoyed by Scott’s indecisiveness when it comes to selecting a soda/power up because they don’t want to miss the movie. He ends up getting nothing because he forgot his wallet. Then images of a teen pop idol from a bunch of promotional posters jump off and attack Scott, who doesn’t want to hit a girl. Ramona steps in to help him make the punches because he’s going to have to fight a girl eventually among her evil exes. When hit the duplicates disappear from existence, leaving behind coupons for free drinks.
What they got right: Scott Pilgrim Versus The World is not my kind of story but I do see the creativity involved. It’s on display here, as O’Malley was inspired by video games and cartoons when designing the world of Scott Pilgrim. The art style works well enough for the story. Scott really isn’t a hero. He’s kind of a jerk but he’s not trying to be. It just comes natural to him but there’s still a certain charm as a character that you want to see him win.
What they got wrong: We never find out (in this story anyway) who sent the pop idol duplicates to attack Scott or why. They theorize ninja magic and that’s as far as they go.
What I think overall: I’m not really sold on the story personally but it is a well done comic, and it’s nice to see a done-in-one story for Free Comic Book Day.
