Was this originally a Free Comic Book Day offering they turned into the first issue? No, it’s a few years too early. And yet that’s how this comes off. That’s not an insult, mind you. However, there’s no real story here. It’s basically just Black Bolt doing a tour of the kingdom while the narrator waxes poetic about his inability to speak and the current events of the Marvel Knights corner they inhabit while other characters give their opinion of him. It’s all just setup rather than telling a story. That’s what I mean about the Free Comic Book Day comment. It’s more about introducing the series than telling a story, which is what some FCBD offerings are when they do an original story.
There isn’t a lot to summarize because of this but the presentation is well done. The art is good, I like the character designs (well, Karnak I can take or leave), you do get to see what everyone thinks of Black Bolt from his crazed brother to his wife to his other relatives, a minor understanding of what the Inhumans are, and what’s currently going on in their lives. It could be enough to check out the full twelve issue run for many new readers. Not necessarily me but that’s more my tastes than anything about the comic itself.
So in the end it’s a good comic. There just isn’t much to talk about. It does the job of introducing the series but not enough to entertain on its own otherwise, though it does try. Not much else to say really.
