Nice poster but it doesn’t sell the comic.

Street Fighter #0

Udon Studios (August, 2003–as posted to ComiXology)

WRITER: Ken Siu-Chong

ARTISTS: Arnold Tsang, Avil Lee, Rob Ross, & Andrew Hou

LETTERER: Simon Yeung

Ryu dreams of facing his darker side, while his master narrates about Ryu being at a crossroads, to decide to follow the path of light and darkness. The battle, which Ryu is losing, is interrupted when his master calls. Ryu rushes back to the dojo only to find him dead, a symbol on the wall made from the master’s blood. Too bad I can’t read Japanese.

This appears to just be a preview and yet in a way the first issue. I’ll have another one of these next week. That means there isn’t much story here to really review, which as a storytelling critic is a problem in a review. We do get a sense of this Ryu, and possibly what this first storyline will be about, as Ryu needs to decide how far he’ll go to become the ultimate fighter, and how a pupil before him chose the darker side.

Of course the art is amazing. It’s Udon. However, I’m looking for story and if this already shows up in a trade collection or the first issue it’s not worth the trouble of tracking down unless you can get a good price for it. It’s Udon’s usual quality but it’s too short to really recommend unless it becomes important to the first issue.
