This is Superman. Remember it future comic, TV, and movie writers. It was rare in the New 52 period.
I didn’t sleep well last night so I need something quick and easy to post tonight. Surprisingly YouTube came through and pointed me to another video defending Superman, my favorite superhero. I will take any opportunity to promote a pro-Superman story or commentary in a world that continues to reject everything he stands for and cynically believes he couldn’t exist not because science rejects his powers but because they reject the goodness of humanity. At least until the next big tragedy when we all come together to help each other.
The video I’m posting tonight is “Why Superman Is More Important Now Than Ever” by Gentle Mushroom. In this video the host goes over some examples of why Superman is such a beloved hero not because of his powers but because of what he does with them. Have a seat because it lasts a while but all of it is on point and I totally agree with it. If you want to understand what we see in Superman, here you go.
I posted this in the comments:
Superman’s power set is a dime a dozen in the DC Universe. You can’t swing a dead ca…let me rephrase for the people who know…It’s a shorter list of superheroes AND supervillains who don’t have at least one of Superman’s powers. Costumes (or uniforms if you so choose)? Kind of a staple for both superheroes and supervillains, even the ones today that look like they came off the rack at the local department store with a logo slapped on. These do not make Superman. It’s who he is as a person, the MAN over the SUPER, and that’s why he’s my favorite superhero. Cool as his powers and his world are, Clark’s first response is always “I want to help others”. It’s why I reject the Injustice take on Superman, believing Lois is the only source of his sanity and virtue, that he would ever embrace the tyrant people assume anyone with his powers would become because the moment he does…he stops being Superman.
Zack Snyder infamously said that if you think superheroes wouldn’t kill you’re “living in a #@%#$#% fantasy world”, but that’s what fiction is. He should listen to the line given by Superman himself (through a writer who understands Superman better than Snyder does) about how dreams save us, give us hope. That’s what draws me to Superman. As much as I enjoy the science fiction elements, the powers, the action…all that surface level stuff, it’s the fun moments showing that Clark Kent is just as human as the rest of us, WHY he believes in humanity, and why he wants to protect them while also being in awe of normal humans.
Superman will always be my favorite superhero and I will always take whatever opening I can to showcase just why. In this world, and in the superhero world, we need more heroes like Superman not because of what he can do but why he does what he does.
