Star Power #17

“Star Power And The Last Jump Gate” part 2
WRITER: Michael Terracciano
ARTIST: Garth Graham
The Traveller arrives, and her captain, Tarai Landon, is one of the officers who helped Star Power against the Ninth Wormhole Invasion. Danica’s friends are going to miss her–especially Grex, who will be busy debriefing Burke. While she’s initially upset that Burke was one of the one trying to kill Danica, the two find common ground as former Void Angels. Meanwhile, Beena is back to work, interviewing Old Tom, who admits he may have to kill Danica if she doesn’t measure up as the Star Power Sentinel. The Traveller makes its way past the last available jump gate and prepares their journey, but Mitch (who is continuing to upgrade) picks up a distress signal from the planet they’re going to and with Landon’s approval, Star Power arrives just as tanks destroy the outpost guarding the jump gate there. A dying soldier begs her to keep it closed…but Mitch automatically activates it, leading right in front of The Traveller.
What they got right: I love Beena’s reaction to Tom’s revelation. It’s a nice sight gag. Burke’s redemption arc continues, and having a friend who underwent the same arc is nice. Plus it will give Grex something to do besides missing Danica. We also get to learn Danica gets along with her dad but not so her mom. We’re told through actions instead of dialog, making it subtle but still getting the point through.
What they got wrong: I hope trying to do four stories at once doesn’t prove a problem to the flow later on.
What I think overall: I continue to enjoy this series. The little touches were the best parts of this story, from Beena’s reaction to the subtle hint of an issue between Danica and her mom to Grex and Burke bonding.
