In the main story: Sonic, Sally, and Antoine are investigating an Eggbot mining operation, tracking what they thought was Ixis but instead finding a power ring. However, that ring belongs to Monkey Khan, a locked-away cyborg created by Robotnik. Though he beats the Eggbots and reclaims his ring crown, Sonic is immediately wary of anything tied to Robotnik and, being Sonic, immediately attacks. Khan runs off with Sally just as more Eggbots arrive. Sonic and Antoine actually put…some of their bickering aside to work together but it’s up to Sally to convince Khan to not be a jerk, and he save the others, a new friendship formed.
Sonic is true form and yet it makes sense given his history, especially recent history. Sonic has developed a warrior’s mindset and wasn’t a questions first guy to begin with. Khan has been locked away for years, another failed Robotnik experiment. (My guess is Ivo was hoping to come back for him once he found a way to control him, or forgot about him when he started using the roboticizer.) It’s a decent introduction to a new character.
The back-up story: One of the roboticized Mobians, now nicknamed “Robians” (probably as an insult), is caught on a dare from her friends and the still organic rabblerousers want to punish her. She’s saved by Chuck and they all agree to let Sally decide what happens. Except Sally is still taking part in the main story, though King Acorn decides to hold court despite his condition…and he orders ALL Robians dismantled, which even the organic crowd is shocked by. St. John tries to speak up and Acorn clobbers him just as Sally and the others return. The king passes out just as they get a call from help from Knuckles (which you may recall leads us into Mammoth Moguls return in Knuckles’ title and the Sonic Super Special–so I’m finally caught up).
This sets up the situation among the war survivors. As hinted previously the Mobians don’t fully trust the Robians despite being their former friends now with their free will restored. Something is up with the King, which will also be explored.
Overall this is a decent issue. Not a great issue but it does a decent job of introducing a new character, not that the comic needed one, and setting up the current social climate. So…decent issue.
