I need to reset my schedule, if you hadn’t noticed from doing two quickposts today, thanks to weather and getting new internet. Luckily Saberspark just posted something that I can utilize. Head to his YouTube channel and thank him by watching more of his videos. It’s not like he knows who I am.
I wasn’t a huge Rugrats fan, but I enjoyed it enough to be disappointed in the remake’s changes, like deaging Suzie rather than keeping her as a buffer against Angelica, or ditching Chuckie’s stepsister because heaven forbid we have an interracial couple raising their children from previous marriages together. And of course the feminist tomboy is a lesbian because this is the 2020s. Tomboys are back to being othered, only now they’re told to celebrate not being girls after fighting for years to be seen as girls and yes this is still bothering me because it’s still an issue. Stereotyping sucks!
When I was a kid, where tomboys were finally being treated the way they wanted to be, as girls who just happen to be into traditionally boy-preferred activities and hated dresses, you could tell who made a show from their art or animation style. Hanna-Barbera and Ruby-Spears were close, given their history, but there were still subtle differences, while Sunbow and Filmation were easy to tell apart. The days of the big studio is over, at least in the US, while in Japan you can still tell Gainax from TMS.
Klasky Csupo had their own unique art and storytelling style, focusing on slice of life comedies that leaned into the benefits of animation in forming a fictional universe. Unfortunately they’re not really around anymore, or if they are it’s the same way Atari is still around…technically. What happened to the promising studio? Saberspark decided to find out, and we’re done talking tomboys. For now!
