Technically this is the last comic I have yet to review from my ComiXology library besides the leftover Scooby-Doo comics I didn’t finish reviewing because every story was just me complaining they made a bad mystery comic. However, Tomorrow Jones #1 isn’t formatted with the ComiXology guided view feature and the regular Kindle browser wouldn’t zoom in to read it. So I had to go…elsewhere to finish the ComiXology review set.

“Now you’re going to help me clean all this up.” “But we didn’t do…” “I SAID you are helping me clean this up!”

Tomorrow Jones #1

(2012)

STORY/LETTERER: Brian Daniel

ARTIST: Johan Manandin

Tomorrow Jones is the daughter of superheroes, one of them from another planet and the other using a magic crystal he shares with his son, Tomorrow’s brother. However, she feels out of place in both the normal and hero worlds. Her parents are clueless and when she finally gets them to realize she’s ready she isn’t happy with the rules. So when she finally has enough of the school bully she finally openly uses her powers, then while hiding from her parents’ lecture on using powers in the open without a disguise, she and her brother, Zach, see a crime in progress. Tomorrow decides she’s not going to hide who she is anymore and stops the robbery, revealing herself (her powers, folks) to the world.

I don’t know. I like the story itself. The art is really good and the story is well told. You can understand her perspective and it’s fun. It just feels like a deconstruction. The reason for the disguise, including the glasses, feels like a rejection of superhero tropes without understanding them. It also rejects the glasses by trying to make them special magic identity-hiding glasses and as I’ve said time and time again, THAT’S NOT HOW THE CLARK KENT DISGUISE WORKS! So I’m of two minds on this one. It’s good, but personally I have…notes.

I actually wouldn’t mind checking out the next few issues, but I don’t have them. Yes, I could do what I was forced to do with this one and use the same…resource, but unlike the Malibu Ultraverse comics (that Marvel is never going to do squat with), and this being an indie comic, it doesn’t feel right to me. I don’t hate the concept itself or the execution. I’m just worried this is going to be about rejecting superhero tropes for the sake of it, though later issues could prove me wrong. Maybe someday I’ll find out.

This covers the last of my ComiXology library. Check out the Sunday post to see where I’m going for my Thursday comic rush for awhile.
