Star Power #26

“The Life Smugglers” part 1
WRITER: Michael Terracciano

The last Star Power story begins…meaning I have four weeks to figure out what will go in the Friday review slot. Planet Axiosis, Grex’s home planet. Detective Semme Smith has learned the five remaining crime families are gathering for a meeting. One of them, the Embuvalij, is the only family not connected to the human smuggling operation, but they’re calling the other families in. (I’m guessing Hymn was a middleman of some sort?) Thinking that will change, and not being able to get past a corrupt system, Semme reaches out to Burke and through him to Grex. Meanwhile, the Chief has given information he has on the case unknowingly to one of the Embuvalij’s operatives. Burke and Grex attempt to go in undercover, but Burke is captured along with other humans, and Star Power comes to help find him.
What they got right: I like the growing friendship between Danica and Burke, though Burke is hoping to…well, get what Semme gets from Grex at the hotel during the undercover operation. Let’s leave it at that. It’s also well hidden for an all-ages audience. You can do thinks like that if you’re clever. This is a much better idea for the human trafficking operation so far.
What they got wrong: Though I do have to ask why Hymn was part of this operation when his obsession is building his choir. I was guessing he was after the DNA but that wasn’t really specified. Now he’s in this…why?
What I think overall: For the last Star Power story, the noir style take is an interesting one to go with. This should be interesting, if not fun.
