Ever wonder why the Game Theory YouTube channel is called The Game Theorists, plural? In the days before algorhythms forced YouTubers to not share channels, there were multiple contributors to said channel. There were multiple shows, each tackling game theorizing in different ways. One focused on the science, one on culture, one on crossovers, and so on. When things changed, channel master Matthew “MatPat” Patrick believed the other contributors had better chances with their own channels, and thus this one became exclusively Game Theory and other things MatPat wanted to do, before starting three unrelated channels of theorizing.
One of these projects, done in association with YouTube’s failed attempt to be like Netflix and Amazon Prime by creating original content…ignoring ALL the original content on YouTube they weren’t part of because YouTube has forgotten what YouTube is, was Game Lab, some of which still requires a YouTube Premium subscription to watch. Another show he worked on was Reality Check. Both shows were about allowing himself and other gamers a chance to experience the events of a video game in the real world, like a first-person shooter versus and actual (paintball) gun battle.
Now that MatPat is leaving the theory quartet he started behind he went back to this concept for one last Reality Check, comparing actual tanks to the MMO World Of Tanks…which he also so as an opportunity to bring the former contributors together one last time, as a sort of “where are they now” reunion…with tanks. See if you recognize any of these guys (some of which have shown up here multiple times), though I’ll link to their new channels after the video.
So where are these former Game Theorists now?
- You should already know Gaijin Goombah, since I’ve used Which Ninja for article fodder quite often. While not the only show on his channel, discussing Japanese culture and media, it’s my favorite of his shows. Culture Shock followed him to his new channel and he just launched another one focused on his love of the Warhammer franchise, especially their take on the orcs.
- Trailer Drake, former host of Crossover, as also shown up here as Comic Drake, where he talks about comic books and his name is Drake. We don’t always agree but I do find his perspective on comics interesting. He was Trailer Drake because…I think he reviewed trailers at one point? I don’t really know. When I found his channel I didn’t even know about the Game Theory connection at first.
- Ryder, aka FootofaFerret, is the host of A Brief History, where he quickly summarizes the history of a show, YouTube contributor, or whatever else he wants to discuss. He brought that show to his own channel. He also has a second channel about trading card games and other toys.
- Austin still occasionally does his “The Science Of…” series on his channel, ShoddyCast, but also discusses other video game related material. He was the last of the alternate game theorists to leave the channel, deciding he still would have better luck being there before also going to his own channel.
- Lee you’ll see again as the former Breakdown host will be taking over for MatPat on the Film Theorists channel and has already done a few Shorts for the channel.
It’s nice and cool that MatPat got to get together with the guys who helped form this channel for one last reunion before he joins them at doing things other than fictional theorizing about game. Meanwhile there’s only a little more time before the new hosts take over, and I will be bluntly judging them when they officially take over. Don’t worry, if you new hosts see this. I’m giving you a chance and be unbiased. I am hoping the replacements will be in good hands. Or at least don’t turn into Extra Credits.
