Homebrew Comics (2021)

Okay, so the title is either “Character Sheets”, which is the one I see more often in the descriptions, or “Welcome To Orientation”, which looks like a title the way it’s presented on the inside cover. Also note that I’m using the Drive Thru Comics version, but there is a free version from Homebrew themselves. I am not aware of any changes.

WRITERS: Christopher Michael, Austin Ferguson, Brad Hayes, Obie Dancy, & Terreyl Wilkins

ARTIST: Nathan Broughton

COLORISTS: Jack Sloan & Nathan Broughton

LETTERER: Christopher Michael

EDITORS: Christopher Michael, Brad Hayes, & Terreyl Wilkins

A group of people (some of whom share the first names of some of the writers) are brought to Technetic, the biggest technology firm in this universe, for orientation. They’re at the same orientation despite being in different departments, which despite apparently knowing each other they still find weird. During the orientation bad guys come in and storm the place, killing a bunch of the people while searching for some object. They’re repelled by…I guess the writers. Later they learn everyone except Brad has superpowers now and they form the Covert Reconnaissance Infiltration Team and go on their first mission. They succeed but don’t get along very well and don’t like their costumes.

Okay, I’m not sure about judging this one. It looks like a bunch of friends got together and decided to make a comic book about themselves. Rather than a parody they opted for a more serious story. I think this is also a preview, because otherwise the superpowers come out of nowhere, only mentioned in narration that they got them, and there’s a lot of questions that don’t get answered. The art is okay but not outstanding.

They apparently got six issues and a trade of the first five as of this writing so they must be doing well enough to keep it going. I’m not sure it won me over, however. If they had fun making it and it’s doing well enough for them, who am I to judge…besides being a critic doing a review, of course.
