In our main story Tails is convinced things are not what they seem to be, and they’re not. Jack insists Sonic stay forever. Sonic plays along but when he and Tails try to sneak out in the middle of the night, Jack catches them. Sonic is forced to destroy the force shield so they can escape, and the still-violent Robians are ready to take advantage of that. However, our heroes are the only ones escaping, as Snively leads an escape from Devil’s Island Gulag, still not sure how it’s happening so fast.
What they got right: Sonic did catch on to Jack’s plan to keep him there (not so much Tails, which is one of Jack’s mistakes, along with clueing him in where the shield controls are, in Sonic’s statue which he also let slip last issue if you catch it). It’s a good escape and while my first thought was that Snively and the other criminals escaping the Gulag should have been it’s own story there’s at least a thematic connection between the two events.
What they got wrong: It’s never really explained WHY Jack wants Sonic to stay here permanent outside of the city being a fan even after hearing about Ixis, or why Tails isn’t discussed the same way. Could Tails leave? It’s not really made clear.
What else is there?: The inconsistent use of clothing in this series was on display so much that even I had to take notice. The two masseuses really highlight it. Yeah, call me a furry if you want, whatever, but while sexy bird girl has the inference of breasts with her tight tank top and daisy duke short, sexy wolf girl just has a belt and nothing else, but no breasts (just a bump in her body where they would be, so not quite anthropomorphic enough for me to give it the same defense as other fantasy and sci-fi humanoids…like most animal females in the Sonic franchise). It’s a kids comic back when Archie still made those so I’m not disappointed they don’t have breasts and that would go against OFFICIAL Sonic media (I’ve heard about the…less kid-friendly fan works). It’s just kind of weird. The Sandblast males all have normal clothes while as usual Sonic and Tails only wear sneakers and gloves. It continues with the Gulag criminals as well. It’s just weird that THIS is the story where I really noticed the inconsistency enough to remark on it.
In the back-up story, St John’s team infiltrates one of the buildings and captures a SWAT Bot. Sally wants answers but St John, who seems to have lost his romantic interest in the Princess somehow from the way he acts, is acting on her father’s orders, so she turns her anger towards him. It’s an okay story.
What I think overall: The two part main story would feel like filler if it wasn’t for the potential return of the villains, that comes off more like a second back-up story. The actual back-up story is okay and we do see their teamwork has improved but I still don’t have a huge reason to care outside of Hershey’s and Heavy & Bomb’s potential redemptions…and I barely know Heavy and Bomb. It’s a story I enjoyed when I first got it but time is showing to have cooled me off to this series I think.
