In time for Halloween, DC Studios just dropped the trailer for Creature Commandos, the first story to come from the DC Gunniverse. The original idea was that the US military opted to use monsters to help fight the Nazis…which is odd because usually in those old stories it was the Nazis tapping into the occult. They would be joined by G.I. Robot, a robot designed to fight guess who.
This is how the Gunniverse begins, as far as when the audience sees it. It should give us an idea of the tone and style James Gunn will be going as he takes charge of his own personal take on the DC Universe and the large variety of characters that will be getting movies, cartoons, and live-action series. This is how he’s introducing his DC, and fans will get a sense of how he will treat these characters and their world.
We’re in trouble, folks.
Anyone else getting Suicide Squad/Guardians Of The Galaxy vibes?
Previously that’s all Gunn has done (ooh, I rhymed) with DC, the Suicide Squad movie people liked, and the Peacemaker series I never see anybody talk about. This has the same humor, the same quirky characters, and maybe he could do it better than a lot of other failed attempts in movies and comics, but there’s another issue.
If you thought you’d be getting a superhero universe that parents could take kids to, as the parents because interested in superheroes when they were kids, look at how violent just his trailer is. Heads exploding, eyes falling out, gunning down Nazis…I would not want to show this to my kids if I had any. And since this is how Gunn convinces us he’s going to do this right, I’m having doubts about his character-overflowing Superman movie. Between the comedy and the gore, if this is the future of the DC universe in theaters I’m really not interested.
I’m not sure what else to say. The animation and voice acting seemed good, so the quality may be okay. It’s the tone that turns me off. Sorry, kids, but as much as you love superheroes, the grown-ups still want to play with your toys. No matter how good it turns out to be critically, I’m personally out of this and questioning what this version of DC is going to be worth my time.
