Quanta #1

Emerald Star Comics (November, 2016)

“Rise Of The Empire” part 1

CREATOR/WRITER: Lennit

ARTIST: David Cardno

LETTERER: Tomas Marijanovic

EDITOR: Matt Kelly

Mole men invade the surface, and the heroine Quanta is there to fight them…though after a few waves of villains they finally manage to overpower her to take her underground. Except they think she’s the heroine Charge. They’ve also walled off the city, and the Pentagon calls forth a bunch of other heroes, including Charge, to go to the rescue.

That’s really all that happens. That means I don’t have a lot to say. The art is good, but I wouldn’t call this “Silver Age” in how the story is told. Like a lot of stories that think they’re Silver Age style the threats are on par but Silver Age stories also took their world seriously. This is just what happened in those comics while this seems to actively be trying to be comedy. That’s not a dealbreaker, mind you. Only some of the jokes were bad, but this is closer to The Tick than most Silver Age comics I’ve read, and I just finished with the Silver Age era of Blue Beetle, so that’s recent reading.

Overall, it’s a fun story and a second issue to conclude the story might have been worth checking out. As it stands, if you go in with the right mindset you might have fun with this story. Just don’t expect it to match the period the comic thinks it’s in.
