Looks more Minecraft than that Jack Black movie.

The Minecraft Inspired Misadventures Of Frigiel & Fluffy Free Comic Book Day edition

Ablaze (Free Comic Book Day 2023, posted to Drive Thru Comics in August)

WRITERS: Jean-Christopher Derrien & Frigiel

ARTISTS: Studio Minte

Apparently, Frigiel is a French YouTuber who plays a lot of Minecraft. I don’t speak French so I’m going to assume this was inspired by his playthroughs of the game, possibly in character as other Minecraft let’s plays have done. I don’t know how many because I don’t follow the game. Just the lore on Game Theory. Don’t worry, the comic is in English.

In this scenario, Frigiel is a student of magic training with his grandfather. Fluffy is his doggy companion. Joined by the thief-in-training Alice, who we see using her skills to test local security rather than steal stuff as a crook, and the builder Abel, who has a crush on Alice, the four friends decide to help when watermelon shipments mysteriously disappear on the way back to the village. They deal with zombie hordes and a bunch of criminal thieves only to find the shipment somehow vanished. Frigiel figures out who the criminal is and the group defeats him and his magician accomplice, while the thieves report to their boss about their defeat. Apparently he has a connection to Alice.

What they got right: A Free Comic Book Day comic that is complete. I always like to see that. The story is fun, with bright colors that won’t concern parents but should entertain older readers with the comedy. It isn’t the “quirky” stuff you see now. It doesn’t take the world seriously but it does take the adventure and story seriously, which is the right balance. Our heroes are likable. You don’t need to know a ton about the game or the gamer this is based on to be able to enjoy the story, though it probably helps in ways I didn’t catch.

What they got wrong: I don’t have any major complaints.

What I think overall: I kind of want to see more of these stories. I can’t watch the actual playthroughs thanks to the language barrier and I don’t know how many of the comics were translated, but this is a good way to introduce people to the world of Minecraft and for fans who want to see stories set in the game. Granted I haven’t played because I didn’t even have time when it was a free game before Microsoft bought it, so fans may disagree with me. All I know is I liked it and want to see more misadventures with these characters.
