“The Void”

CREATOR/WRITER: Vince Hernandez

CHARACTER DESIGNS/ARTIST: Khary Randolph

COLORIST: Emilio Lopez

LETTERER: Josh Reed

Sudana is called to ask about some undefined strange occurrences. She tells the story of Samsun, a being that fed on magic and people, and his banishment to a Phantom Zone type prison realm called the Void Realm. Now he’s finding a way out, with allies. The two beings decide they’re all screwed and go to do evil, but Sudana thinks there is hope. The question is how it involves a stage musician named Hank The Magnificent and his cat, Sparkles?

There’s also a text preview describing other beings in the Void Realm, as portions of a text but it’s not clear if it’s the same religious scriptures mentioned earlier. Actually, we don’t know a whole lot. Who is Sudana and what are her “kind”? How does the griffin on the cover fit in? The mystery with the magician is part of the hook and I have no problem with it, but there are details I’m rather confused about, and given that this isn’t my genre I won’t be finding out about.

As a reviewer, however, the comic’s okay. The art is pretty good. It does a fair job setting up parts of their world, the history of the series villain, and through the book pages (the book within the comic) I’m guessing some of the foes Sudana and Hank are going to go up against. And possibly the cat since he or she is prominent and the griffin because he’s on the cover.

If urban fantasy is your think this looks like it could be a good series. Since it isn’t mine my journey ends here regardless.
