Continuing from Firearm #6, Swan has come to rescue Kevin, but Samuels is not ready to give up on is control of Prime. Our heroes make their escape, with Kevin now convinced he’s a fake, which Samuels is happy to take advantage of given that he knows the limits of Prime’s powers, namely Kevin’s emotional state and the abuse limits of Prime’s body. Inspired by Swan, Kevin creates a new Prime body, one less superhero and more anti-hero, using Prime’s strength to rip the control collar from Kevin’s neck by ripping into his own Prime body to reach it. As his operation crashes around him, Samuels takes himself out of the story the permanent way. Is this a new attitude for Prime, and what will happen when Kelly wakes up and realizes Kevin IS Prime?
What they got right: We get a new ability for Prime’s body, and given that it’s based on what Kevin imagines it’s not impossible to have happen. We’ll meet a character later with the same goop body thing but basing her powers more on fantasy stories than superheroes or Kevin’s new influence, Firearm. There’s action but there’s also growth for Kevin.
What they got wrong: Samuels could have been an interesting antagonist for Prime but they pushed him too evil too fast and wasted his potential.
What I think overall: While thus far none of the Ultraverse stories are ones I’d want to rush out and buy today or might read again in the future, I am enjoying reading this and a few other titles now. Curious to see where this story goes.
