A tale from Clark’s high school years. By now Clark has learned at least part of his origin but is still getting used to his growing powers. Lana can tell something is wrong, partly because she’s interested in Clark since she doesn’t know his secret yet, while Jonathan (who is narrating) doesn’t think much of Clark’s other friend, Pete Ross. As the people close to him worry about him, there’s something new to worry about when a tornado hits Smallville. Clark manages to save one of his neighbors as the tornado just taught him that he can fly. What’s next for Smallville…and for Clark? Pick up the full first issue, “Winter”, and find out.
What they got right: While not the first full issue, the part of the story they used ends at a decent narrative end. You get a sense of Clark’s dilema, and where he is at this point in his life, with the rest to be resolved in the full miniseries/trade.
What they got wrong: Tim Sale’s art is very good, don’t misunderstand, but his Clark is a bit puffy for my preference. It would have been nice to hear what Jonathan was saying to Clark when the boy was having his doubts rather than a few point brought up in the narration. We don’t get enough looks at how the Kents raised the future Superman.
What I think overall: I hear good things about this miniseries and this preview does look interesting. Might be something to check out in the future.
