It looks like the retro comic break was timely. From issue #89-93 there is a gap in my collection. That must be the first time I got bored with the series, coming back when it started the new direction to see if it got any better.
I know this is an Archie comic, but did we need another teen school story?

Since I last read a Sonic comic at this time, Knothole has become a new Mobotropolis, complete with hospital, prison, and even a school system. Sonic, now losing his royal title, is separated from Tails, who is sent to a school for younger kids until Athair takes him away, but shares a class with Bunnie and Mina and at some point Bunnie became unhappy with Mina. Meanwhile Sally is being taught at the castle, meaning Sonic and Sally still haven’t seen each other in awhile. However, back in the old Mobotropolis, still Robotropolis, Robotnik has brought overlanders into the city, but Robotnik’s niece doesn’t trust him, and while snooping around comes across a Robian and panics. Robotnik is still evil (isn’t this still Robo-Robotnik, just now resembling Eggman from the games?) and schemes with Snively to get revenge on his brother, Snively’s father, who neither of them likes.
This takes up only have the comic. The Knuckles story is now sharing equal space but we’ll get back to him. This is the new direction for the comic and I’m betting I didn’t stay around long. Right now I don’t care about the high school drama, the time I’ve missed means I don’t know why Sonic was de-titled or not allowed to leave Knothole, or how the overlanders came to live in Robotropolis. I wanted to see action, not Degrassi Mobian High.
As for the Knuckles story, I’m really out of the loop. Echidnas are trying to drain Knuckles’ boosted power which turned his body green, the weasels are working for the echidnas, Charmy is back with his fiance Saffron, who rescue Knuckles, the attempt to drain him backfires with a blast so bright the weasels aren’t even greedy enough to continue, and I am so clueless as to what’s going on. Thanks to the presentation, I’m not even sure I care.
Overall this comic is just kind of weak. I came back for the new direction, but I don’t think I stayed with it very long. We’ll see how long in the coming weeks.
