Collective Of Heroes Free 2017 Edition
Free Comic Book Day 2017
For those of you who missed the previous installments, Collective Of Heroes was a website linking to various superhero comics on the internet at the time. The last time I checked both the site and many of the linked to comics are no longer available unless you want to go through the Internet Archive or find the printed trade collections.
We have ten comics to go through, so let’s get to it.
Adamant
This is more a preview than a proper story. From what I can tell, the villain won against the most powerful hero on the planet. And then he returns. There’s an interesting concept. What if the villain succeeded in taking over the planet? All we really get is a bit of action, robots talking over each other (thank goodness there’s no actual audio), and some really good artwork. For a preview that’s not bad.
Heroes Of The World And Beyond
I follow even less of what’s going on here. Someone named Tanner is a bug dude attacking heroes and villains alike looking for answers of his existence. Really didn’t do anything for me.
Miss Melee
Sample from issue #2, I think. It’s mostly told through her daughter, who doesn’t know mom used to be the martial arts superhero Miss Melee. We get caught up with her origin, mom’s thoughts filling in gaps for the reader. I bet if she ever finds out her mom is the superhero she’s fawning over (not that way, she’s just a fan), she’d freak. This was nice, but I’d like to see at least one of these stories be self-contained.
Our Supermom
This continues from the previous issue. The heroes of this universe (this is NOT a shared universe in this title) are worried that the power-stealing villain will come for her as the most powerful hero on their roster. Hardcase (not the Ultraverse one even though he’s apparently also an actor) tries to force her into protective company. She roughly turns them down, as does her son and husband. (Daughter was having a now ruined slumber party.) They leave her to her own devices…though they probably just help the baddie find our semi-retired heroine. This was a good conclusion, but I wonder where the story goes next. Maybe we’ll have more in the next issue.
Phineus
A woman tells her daughter about the various adventures she had with her husband Phineus (not the kid who builds stuff every summer) against monsters, gods, dark mages, and other threats. Someday this little chosen may get to fight alongside them, when her magic is strong enough. Despite the little girl calling them superheroes this is really an urban fantasy story with mages and monster. It’s really not my kind of comic. Could have done without naked evil old witch boobs, too.
Scapula: “Giant Attack Monsters Mega Battle”
We have a title for this one. Scapula learns the giant robot bronto he once failed to destroy San Francisco with isn’t destroyed, but taken to Area 51. Once he gets his associates to stop fighting each other, they eventually get there, but as the story ends the dino is one of the few things they didn’t find. It’s fun if you’re into watching the villains fail but there’s no surprise these morons haven’t conquered the world. I wouldn’t trust them to make toast.
The Specialists
We’re doing another “from what I can tell” here, but it seems one of the heroes was brainwashed by the Nazi scientist and beats up his mutated teammate who also speaks German. The army arrives to find heroes beaten up. That’s as much as I can gather. I couldn’t even really give you names, since the only two characters who had them didn’t interest me. And I just finished reading the story before writing this so you can imagine how memorable these characters aren’t.
The Emerald Yeti by Minter & Pruitt
Continuing from last issue…and hardly going anywhere. The mad scientist is using some device to control the Yeti, who finally has thoughts we can read, to break into a government facility. Also, the lady who wanted her money is now a surgical mess as well. I’m not really learning a lot about this story, but the black and white artwork is nice. Might be another one to continue next issue.
Vanguard by Dan Butcher
From issue #13 according to the “cover”. More breaking into places and maybe mind control? I can’t even really summarize this because it’s just a lot of action. I don’t even know who the heroes are, though I’m guessing the glowing purple eyes mean something.
Wonder Weenies
Oh not this crap again. Talk about ending on a low note. It’s their really dumb origin, early villains, and all framed by the creator of the comic being hounded by the jerk of the group demanding Deadpool. I think I’m going to start ignoring this comic in the remaining issues.
overall
A few good stories among I wish I could read away from this, because so much is either not interesting to me personally, okay I guess, or Wonder Weenies.
