The title might fit the story, but how they got away with using the TV show’s logo I couldn’t tell you.

Downunda Freedom Fighters: “Myth Taken Identity” part 1
I’m not against a lighter story given how heavy things have gotten lately, but somehow a parody of the original Guardians Of The Galaxy comic (not the version most of you know thanks to James Gunn and the MCU) seems an odd choice, especially as a multiple issue story. Zonic the Zone Cop plays Uatu in telling us the story of a Mobius where Robotnik managed to send Sonic away in a spaceship and succeeds in wiping out most of Mobius. The survivors leave for other planets where their descendants gain new powers and return to Mobius just as Sonic comes out of stasis with a new trick of his own. The “Freedom Fighters Of The Galaxy” meet with Sonic as well as Tails’ descendant, who was still on Mobius. Things take a bad turn when Snively shows up as a Silver Surfer parody to herald the coming of Robolactus.
I’m sure this works for somebody but given that I’ve never found Gallagher’s humor all that humorous and all I know about the original Guardians comes from the one comic I own and things I’ve heard this whole story is lost on me. Also, I still think the GAMES should be Sonic Prime, given that they’re the source material and the comics started out by stealing from both DIC cartoons at the time.
As for the Downunda Freedom Fighters back on regular Mobius, a mix of Marvel and DC’s Legion Of Superheroes form part of the next parody after the team tries to find a replacement for Wombat Stu since he joined the Secret Service. (I guess he hasn’t returned since the Service took time off last issue.) This is followed by a rather weak origin story for the team because it’s full of coincidences and bumping into each other (literally in one case) before learning there’s a bunyip causing trouble. A lot of time was wasted on nonsense and a weak origin story.
Overall this was just not a good start to either story, really just a bunch of introductions of reimagined and old characters. The next issue is part two for both stories. Hopefully that’s two of two but we’ll find out next Sonic review.
