“How much do I get paid for this?” “Money. You’re hilarious.”

The Circus #1

Markosia Enterprises (2019)

WRITER: Joseph Browder

ARTIST: Juan Manuel Almirón

LETTERER: Ian Sharman

Kora works for Pearlman Rizzer. Rizzer claims human time travel is impossible, that his project will be able to send data into the past to warn of impending disaster. This is a lie since Kora, with her robot teddy bear companion Bec, goes into the past to steal certain items for him. She has one final job before being allowed to keep her mother from her past car accident, so you know it’s going to go wrong. She needs to bring a certain man back to her present, but Doppler is not easy to convince as Scotland Yard is busting down his door. Kora’s time-stopping star things manage to allow her to get him to escape, but when they wear off she and Bec are shot.

What they got right: Time travel is a tricky premise but the story concept is good. A thief after specific items, a robot teddy bear companion with an attitude, some alternate group tracking them, a mission gone wrong…there are some good ideas here that could hold interest into the next issue.

What they got wrong: We’re going to ignore the time travel paradoxes of altering history even as she’s sent to steal things at a point in time where they won’t be missed? I hope later issues explain why the comic is called The Circus and using a circus type font when nothing circus-like is involved.

What I think overall: It’s an interesting premise. Maybe sometime in the future I’ll look more into it.
