What’s that you say, people who have been following along? I was going to move Ultraverse Premiere up here to finish the Prime story? Well, funny thing. Apparently I can wait on that based on how its structured (though it does leave a cliffhanger on how there’s more than one Prime), while a Lady Killer story will continue into the next few issues. So I’m back to this irritating order rather than a proper release order. It’s actually taking the fun OUT of reading the Ultraverse, so I don’t recommend following it. Anyway…
Warstrike #1
Malibu Comics/Ultraverse (May, 1994)
“The Heart”
WRITER: Dan Danko
PENCILER: Hoang Nyguen
INKER: Bob Downs
COLORING: Tim Divar & Violent Hues
LETTERER: Dave Lanphear
EDITOR: Roland Mann
Continuing from his Ultraverse Premiere story, a cybernetic armor…something like that named Nero tries to get revenge on Warstrike but ends up getting himself blown up…but was it because he wanted to kill the pusher himself? From there we meet Warstrike’s alter ego, Brandon Tark, as well as his assistant, his tech guy, and I think his girlfriend. But something is bothering him about this missing girl case. Should he not trust the politician father? Meanwhile, an anti Ultra group called Xanadu has made Warstrike their first target for their own Ultra, Blind Faith.
What they got right: Okay, we have a bit more explanation about the case Warstrike is on. We meet his supporting cast…sort of. We also have his enemies introduced.
What they got wrong: Did we need enemies distracting from this find the child case that aren’t connected to the case? Why is Tark wearing a suit and being talked to like he runs a company? Why does he have Youngsblood Disease in half the panels? Was the fight with Nero important? I guess we’ll find out why Warstrike’s motorcycle explodes at the end, but we wasted so much time they might have gotten into it this issue.
What I think overall: While I am curious about the missing girl story, I’m going to give this the next two issues to solve it. This stupid reading order is taking a break from the title then, and taking a huge break after that. So when these three are done, presumably the full story arc, I’ll see if this comic has a future in MY reading list.
