Peacemaker #6 [FINAL ISSUE…kind of]
Charlton Comics (unpublished)
Okay, so what apparently is going on here is that this is an unpublished comic. Comic Book Plus really doesn’t tell you more about it than that, so I don’t know how they got their hands on it. It’s also just a Peacemaker story, no back-up, so it’s going to be shorter than usual.
“The Golden Pharaoh”
WRITER: Joe Gill
ARTIST: Pat Boyette
EDITOR: Dick Giordano
Is he a reincarnated pharaoh or just a namesake gone crazy? Whatever the case, Chufru has stolen a lot of gold because it filters radiation better than what we usually use. Apparently. Now he’s going to let everybody kill each other in a nuclear war while his people are safe in a gold pyramid bunker. He also destroys the Peace Palace, kidnaps Nora, and shoots down Peacemaker’s jet with a mirror laser the Mythbusters would be jealous of. However, the bunker becomes a tomb when Peacemaker forces an oil fire in the bunker by attacking Chufru’s weapons while Nora takes advantage of the situation and knocks the pharaoh out for trial.
Okay, the black and white art somehow makes the new front to back fin look less lame, and that’s it for praise. I don’t buy the “science”, apparently anybody can get their hands on a layout of Christopher’s not so secret home to set bombs and sleeping gas up, the villain’s plans are kind of stupid, and the only other thing I could praise it for is maybe the action if the motivation wasn’t so brain-hurtingly lame.
So now that we’ve looked at the original Peacemaker, except for The Fighting Five back-up stories I have no interest in reading, I really don’t see what DC saw in this character. I can only assume it was a package deal but he might be more interesting as the Watchmen character he inspired, the Comedian. Yes, the Comedian was originally the man who was so into peace that he killed people for it. I’m glad to be done with this series, but there are more pre-DC Charlton characters before we move on to another publisher in the pre-DC Tuesday reviews.
