Austin Jackson is leaving the farm to stay with his brother’s friends in Boston to start a new job, which his dad isn’t happy about but his big brother and little sister are supportive of. On the way he meets a monk on the run from religious fanatics seeking a sword that holds a strange power. The monk disappears after they escape, leaving the sword behind. In Boston, Austin meets his new roommates and a pretty girl who lives in the apartment. At a bar later that night another pretty girl is watching him but whomever she’s reporting to get interrupted when the fanatics find her and want to get information for him. Austin comes to her rescue, surprising himself with his new fighting abilities. Back at the apartment, Austin examines the sword and finds himself transformed while the fanatics use a spear to release a demon into the world.
What they got right: While mostly set-up, they still managed to hold my interest. The focus is on Austin moving to a new place to start a new life, the mystery is set up well enough. The art is quite good. We see there are two factions involved with Austin potentially trapped in the middle.
What they got wrong: I don’t have any major complaints this early on. That’s a rarity. They even managed to get some interesting action moments in, though we’ll have to wait for the superheroing.
What I think overall: This is a pretty good start to the series. Maybe I’ll get to check out more issues in the future.
